The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) recently adopted a position statement on competency and Wound, Ostomy and Continence (WOC) Nursing. The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) recently adopted a position statement on competency and Wound, Ostomy and Continence (WOC) Nursing.

Competency assessment has been a concern in all healthcare areas since 1997 when the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) incorporated competency language into its indicators.

This Position Statement (along with the other sources cited and endorsed in the document) is intended as a guide and resource for WOC nurses and administrators involved in staffing decisions.

For a copy of the position statement, visit the WOCN Society Web site at www.wocn.org/publications/posstate/ or call the WOCN National Office at 888/224-WOCN (9626) for more information.

Founded in 1968, the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) is the only national organization for nurses who specialize in the prevention of pressure ulcers and the management, education and rehabilitation of persons with wounds, ostomies, and continence disorders.

The WOCN Society is a professional nursing society that supports its members by promoting educational, clinical, and research opportunities to advance the practice and guide the delivery of expert healthcare to individuals with wound, ostomies, and continence disorders. It sponsors an annual conference and publishes the Journal of WOCN, a bimonthly peer-reviewed, medical journal. The WOCN Society is headquartered in Glenview, IL.
